Design Statement

The antique material of Medea has been adapted by Marina Carr, setting her narrative about an outsider of a village community in the Irish moors.
We describe this world using a floor of thick, soft bed covers that forces the actors to walk differently as they adjust to the unstable ground. A further motif is the false image of purity and chaste, reflected inparticular in the central wedding scene - white dresses and suits, and the exquisite white sheets of the marital bed. These motifs dialogue with each other to construct our space; the ground as a soft down bed covered by a giant white sheet stretching into the horizon, that can only be navigated as if trudging through deep snow or swamp, and the immaculate wedding act.
In the marriage scene when the outcast Hester Swane confronts in public the groom with his hypocrisy, mud pours down over the wedding guests, white linen and all.
