Design Statement

The Last Voyage of Donald Crowhurst was created through a hybrid of traditional design process - research, discussion, sketching and storyboarding through scale maquettes – followed by ten weeks of intensive workshop-rehearsal where the possibilities of integrating design, technology and performers were pushed to the limit of our imaginations. This exploration broke all the conventions of a standard Canadian rehearsal schedule and production model; text, design, technology and performance were to be explored on equal terms. The process and the creative team were, in fact, so integrated, that it is somewhat artificial to assign credit to particular creative roles, such as “director”, “actor” or “designer” as we contributed collaboratively to the creation of this work. That being said, each member of the production was responsible for the execution of his or her particular specialization. The set and props design was imagined to create a collection of objects that would allow the creative team to discover ways of communicating the story through the workshop process.
