Design Statement

The initial idea of the set-design for this project derives from L'Aide-Mémoire by Jean-Claude Carrière, toward which I analyze the characters and summarize their situations and habits to design various styles of space. Then, an analysis of the transition of characters’ power structure is made under the opposite relation between the male and female characters. In the beginning, the male character controlled the whole space, but he left alone at the end, making the female character, which seemed to gain power, the one who dominate the space. It is thus clear that the figures affect the space, and that such relation is reflected in the environment. By analyzing a text, I developed the basic structure and rationality of the entire set, and inferred the set’s spatial form accordingly. Afterwards, I applied the methods of spatial and interior design in planning the whole space.
