Design Statement
L’aide-Memoire is an endless love chasing story about a never grow-up boy and a bohemian-style girl.
Separation of different temperature zone is done by the large amount use of props light. Lamp on wall, stand and buddies light not only help me to create realistic feeling of the apartment, but also redefine each small area in the same scene and atmosphere setting. Thus, cooperated with actor’s action, I can easily change the temperature besides the actors.
Another lighting design concept is the de-construction and re-construction of time line. To emphasis the flowing of time, changings from morning to afternoon and from evening to night were separated to several light cues. And the cues were reconstructed into one scene. Cues were kept flowing among the performance until the scene end. Thus, no particular moment was stable, but rather like their relationship, is kept dynamic from time to time.

Currently working as an Art SLASH, playing with light and lighting toys, LAI continuous his post graduated study in stage lighting design after obtaining a bachelor degree in CUHK, major in Electronic Engineering.
During his study in Taipei National University of the Arts, he had chances to represent his lighting ideas through different school productions like the Kuandu Arts Festival (2016), Summer Annual Performance of Dance School 2016 and Graduation Showcase of high school sector (Dance School) 2015 and 2016. He meets up with varies artist and companies including Chang Dance Theater, In-Theatre, Leigh Warren and Graeme Collins in the productions. Among the productions, The lighting design of L’aide-Memoire was selected into semi-final of PQ2015 (Taiwan).
LAI keeps to carry out different lighting projects with artists in Hong Kong too. The work 1984 created by Rebecca Pik Ki Wong was selected in BIDAM 2016 (Korea), and Pardon... Pardon? created by Joseph Lee was awarded the Chin Lin Foundation in WDA-AP 2016. The work 2nd Stage produced by CCDC has received very positive feedbacks. Lai would like to explore the world through lighting. His works were showed in Paris, Seoul, Busan, Guang Zhou and Zhong Shan and etc... He would like to visit more place in the future too.
