Design Statement

The intent of this design is to physically house and visually define the playing area, which is reduced to the forestage of the theatre, by reinstating the containing boundaries of the atmosphere of the performance that are available in a proscenium stage. Also, to provide a space that inspires the fundamental characteristics of the convent life (e.g., meditation, isolation, the purification of the spirit) through its formal aesthetic and visual properties, while being at the same time sterile enough to allow for flexibility in the portrayal of each scene in different locations. Finally, to foreground the music and text of this opera by allowing the set to recede from the audience attention by limiting the amount of information it conveys.
