Design Statement

Core Concept: Ants moving home
The scene changes in the performance associate with the images of the people in the absurd and chaotic time of the Umbrella Movement that took place in 2014 in Hong Kong. A tree specimen that has been soaked in chemical fluids is hanging in the mid air horizontally, representing the helplessness in living that is commonly experienced by Hong Kong people. There are totally 12 stories in the play. All the sets, props and furnitures needed for each story have been placed on the stage in the beginning. Each individual object offers a microscopic view into the lives of the characters in different stories, and also acts as a symbol for the situations that people are facing in the real world. Through the transitions between stories, the objects will be removed bit by bit just like “ants moving home”. This happens until the last scene of the play in which the stage is almost empty.
