Born in Mexico, Rodrigo Cortes has been working as a chef and architect until he found
out about theater Design.
Studied architecture in Mexico, he then changed to set design in 2004.
He made professional practices for two years in Tokyo, Japan along his master set
designer Shimakawa Toru in the New National Theater Tokyo. He studied and worked as
an assistant director and set designer for 13 western and Japanese operas. He also studied
the technical and aestetics of KABUKI, which was really influential for his work.
He later moved in 2013 to Zurich Switzerland where he studied Interaction Design /
scenography In the Zurich institute of art & design (ZHdK).
His final project "3 catastrophes I happily survived," based on his experience in Fukushima
daichii meltdown, london bus bomb and Mexico city earthquake was awarded with 3 first
prizes and 1 Jury prize in Switzerland, Italy and Serbia.
