Visible and Invisible

Design Statement

Unlike many dance pieces adopting light merely as a means of “body sculpting,” I put my emphasis on “space structuring” in the production Visible and Invisible. Instead of functioning as a supplementary tool to illuminate dancers, light thus transforms the theatre space into a symbolic stage for physical/choreographic demonstration.

“Separation,” the artistic concept of my lighting design for Visible and Invisible, is mainly derived from the relationship between Nature and cities. In order to visualize the unique angles of the light in a city, my first decision is to make the best use of theatre light and to shape the light into various “squares” as the primary lighting technique of the work. Meanwhile, these “squares” limit dancers’ movement with a sense of confinement. The giant conical beam projected on stage symbolizes the urban jungle, while the black acute angles placed upside down highlight its piercing sharpness.

Chihheng Chuang

CHUANG Chih-Heng began his career as a theatre lighting designer during university, and continued to master the field of theatre lighting design in the Dept. of Theatrical Design & Technology at Taipei National University of the Arts, with the major in Stage Lighting Design. At present he is a professional theatre lighting designer, specializing in presenting different art works with a wide variety of perspectives and creating a distinctive and specialized vocabulary of lights. CHUANG’s work Visible & Invisible was exhibited, on behalf of Taiwan, in The Prague Quadrennial of Performance Design and Space in the Czech Republic in June 2015. In recent years, CHUANG is constantly invited by Taiwan’s merging artists to collaborate, and create surprising cross-fields pollination. In 2016 he had the pleasure of working with CHOU Tung-Yen, winner of the Interactive & New Media Design Award of World Stage Design 2013, and cooperated in Taipei-Copenhagen, using floating projection to interact with the audience in the space of “4D Box”, and this piece was invited and presented in May 2016 at The Culture Yard, Elsinore, Denmark. In addition to his acclaimed experiences, CHUANG is a full-time faculty member at the Department of Performing Arts, She-Te University, teaching Stage Lighting Design and Theatre Practice, in hopes of providing first-class upbringing to the younger generation.
