Design Statement

We were to take these two books and transform them into a full stage musical with believable plot and characters, which allow the audience to understand the complex fantasy world that the author created while still getting the emotional scope needed to connect with the characters in the most realistic way possible for this fantasy rock musical. The author was frequently consulted to keep the story as she told it while making this world come to life. There were 32 cast members, and as many of the ensemble were in each scene as possible to allow the teens more experience. The costume designs for this production were drawn straight from the books descriptions and kept as close to the original work as possible with tweaks to make it more theatrical and exciting. We had a budget of $2250 (this includes cleaning costs), so we pulled from stock and altered most things to suit our needs. Things not in stock were built, i.e. fairy court women's costumes, and rented from a local community theatre company (though there was little of that). We wanted to create a fantasy world with all the details to capture the love story depicted in the books.

Kristen Clark

Kristen Clark is a recent BFA graduate from Carnegie Mellon University in Drama - Costume Design. She was taught how to sew by her mother at the age of 5 and started performing onstage theatre at the same time. Her passion for costume design began when Kristen began assisting the costume designer at Howard County Summer Theatre and has started co-designing there in the past year. Jaclyn Dolamore's Magic Under Glass was her first time designing for Columbia Center for Theatrical Arts, but had started there as a stitcher doing alterations a few years before.
