Design Statement

Lighting for La Traviata plays a tremendous role on one-unit set stage with semicircle wall. The dance floor and doors behind the stage are covered by mirror material occurred lighting repulsion. For solving this encounter, my idea is to “Beat the swords into plowshares”.
When curtain called, audience saw how light makes the back-up actors peep through the inner world of Violetta. The lights focused on five entrances to welcome the guests. Act Ⅱ Scene 1 used lights to emphasize the time transition and the 2nd Scene manipulated the beam to dye the wall multicolored for making party more sumptuous. In the last act, lights applied on the background and Violetta’s white gown, which created an illusion dreamland as if fulfilling vibration of life that contrasted from her bad illness.
In my lighting design concept, specular and diffuse reflection from mirror has become an important symbol in this opera production.

I, Chien-Hao Kuo, received my MFA degree from National Taiwan University of Arts. While majoring in drama directing and screenwriting in college, I got involved with the school acting project in my freshman year. I encountered lighting design experience and received my first lighting award, Golden Lion Award. Later on, my lighting journey has begun.

During my employment in National Theatre and Concert Hall from 2005 to 2014, I designed lights for various productions, such as Summer Jazz, Opera-Studio series, theater and dance programs, and worked with well-known directors and companies, such as American theatre director Robert Willson, Japanese director Suzuki Tadashi, Pina Bausch Dance Company, and Théâtre du Soleil. Also, I design for diverse events, such as TEDx Taipei, exhibition event, and etc.

Currently, I have transferred to National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts (Weiwuying) that is going to become the biggest performing arts venue in Asia. Along with its construction to be finished, I shall help the center to complete its stage lighting equipment installation, employee training, and technical data file creation for the preparation of its opening.
