Design Statement

In this re-telling of Medea, Sam is a single mother living in a council flat. She is abused by her upstairs neighbour who uses deafening music to torment her and her children. The design consisted of a floor and ceiling piece, hung aggressively low, crushing the scene between two planes. The ceiling just cleared the head of the male lead - Sam's persecutor - creating a claustrophobic feel and a sense of oppression by immutable forces: the obstacles of Sam's class and gender. In close collaboration with lighting designer Natasha Chivers, LED panels were installed in the ceiling to evoke different atmospheres and settings outside the flat. The central podium was built to Sam's height: she was the only actor who could stand on it. It becomes Sam's refuge in the alienating architecture of her flat, whilst simultaneously symbolising the pedestal we place women on, particularly young mothers, only to take such pleasure in knocking them off it.

Anna Reid

Anna is a set and costume designer based in London and graduated with distinction from Wimbledon College of Art in 2015. She works mainly with new writing but also on projects giving classical texts a twist for contemporary audiences.
She is the Associate Designer for Damsel Productions, an all-female company producing women's writing with a focus on majority female production teams as an attempt to redress the imbalance of work put on in London. Their productions to date are Dry Land at Jermyn Street, Brute at Soho Theatre and Fury also at Soho Theatre.
She is also the Associate Designer for Antic Face, a company whose work promotes collaborative practice and gender, ethnicity and age diverse casts (Hippolytos at The Victoria and Albert Museum, For Those Who Cry When They Hear the Foxes Scream at Tristan Bates, and School Play at Southwark Playhouse).
She has designed for a number of well respected fringe and off west end venues around London including the Tristan Bates, Jermyn Street, the Finborough, Southwark Playhouse, Soho Theatre and the Bush and has also recently branched into larger regional work with a main house production at the Oldham Coliseum.
