Design Statement

We believed Titus to be a story of duty to country, duty to family, and then making really bad choices in the service of this duty.
This is a “big” play, a play of revenge, and a play about consequences. You can’t take back an action but you can only move forward, even if it leads to unbelievable suffering.
We set out to put this in a grand scale. Big solid block lines, like the clear distinction between right and wrong that exists in Titus’s mind. Reality and logic give way to emotion forcing stark relief between horror and beauty. Atrocities happen in lovely woods. Fire is both memorizing and deadly. A mutilation and rape scene is actually more horrible if in jolting relief to a beautiful setting. Murky and shadowy lighting would allow them to hide. Roving follow-spots track operatically. There can be nowhere to hide from the choices they make. Cause and effect moves this story relentlessly forward. Horrible actions must come to light.
