Design Statement

My practice explores the relationship between body, space, movement and light. The combinations of these elements create illusions that question what we perceive as fantasy and reality. The Narcissus story allowed me to explore these ideas, using digital technology to represent fantasy and the object to represent reality.
The lake/mirror is central to the myth, without it the image of Narcissus would not exist. Narcissus, his reflection and the mirror are interdependent on the existence on one another, creating a confusion between fantasy and reality.
This costume represents the lake emulating the visual effect of the mirror into the theatre space when light or film is projected onto it. This extends the visual of the costume beyond the body and onto the theatre walls that were empty before.
The reflected image creates a paradox, confusing Narcissus to “… woo or be wooed”. Research developed the idea of a paradoxical structure that could interchange between object and costume……

Clare McGarrigle

I studied Embroidery at Manchester Metropolitan University, during this time I undertook a teaching placement on the Art and Design Foundation Course at Leeds College of Art, where I later held a part-time role for 10 years.
Early within my career I understood the importance of redeveloping a creative practice alongside teaching, where the two could feed into and enhance one another. I therefore undertook internships to identify the direction I wanted to take.
I initially interned with London School of Samba, making costumes for their Notting Hill Carnival performance, and went on to work on a number of productions for the Royal Stratford East Theatre, The Royal Court Theatre and Nuffield Theatre as a freelance costume maker.
In 2011 I started the part-time MA in Costume Design for Performance at London College of Fashion, where I was introduced to character and narrative analysis using these as a basis for research to develop designs for costume and performance.
Since graduation, I have worked with Lola Maury Dance, IJAD Dance, SKAdooSH Dance, Extant and Spectra Ensemble, designing costumes for dance and interactive performance. Recently I have undertaken a Senior Lecturer role on Manchester Metropolitan University’s Art and Design Foundation Course.
