Design Statement

Last Days and Times is an R&D project treating the areas of social media, hack, technology and brainwash.
The performance was intended to be immersive asking the “test-audience” to download a smartphone application programmed to react when approaching the “sacred object”.
3 Actors, of whom 2, persuade the audience to participate in a form of a ceremony led by the main actor, treating them as individuals at the start, until they become subjects of an apocalyptic cult, leading them to extinction.
The main reference for the design was the bar code, unique for each item however sold within a mass.
The space takes a configuration of sacred spaces giving the seating a flexible positioning determined by the nature of interaction intended between actors and audience during the performance.
The Geometric-Archaic costumes merge the organic forms of tribal sects with the technological rational aspect, adapting Black & Gold as main colours, referring to the Coltan mineral used as a main element in electronic products.

Tina Torbey

As an architect and musician from Beirut, I have seen art, composition, politics and urban chaos in coexistence revealing an underlying structure uniting them all.
I studied architecture in ALBA-Beirut, graduating top of my class in 2013, earning 3 awards.
I also played the Piano at the Music Conservatoire of Beirut, and graduated with honours in 2012.
While working in architecture, I have performed in musical theatre and opera. It is where my passion for performing arts grew beyond architecture and performance, and decided to combine both into one.
In 2015, I started the MA Design for Performance at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama where I Set designed:
Cabaret, directed by Paul Kerryson
From there many connections were built, having since worked on several productions as a Set and Costume designer, such as:
Last Days and Time by David John Norton, Give it a name company, Cardiff
Dr Angelus, Finborough Theatre, London
Macbeth, as an UK touring performance by Paul Davies, Volcano Theatre Company, Swansea
I am currently the Design Studio assistant at the National Theatre, London, since March 2017.
Finally, I have been shortlisted for the Old Vic 12 and a selected finalist at the WSD 2017 for the category of emerging designers.
