Design Statement

The scenography for “Burning Snow” by phase7 was specially created for the opening of the European Capital of Culture 2014 Umea. It´s mainly inspired by the culture of the indigenous minority of Sami, nomads with a long tradition and deep connection to nature. The stage set up combines the progress of nowadays Europe and the precious traditions of Sami culture. A frozen river is the foundation of the stage set up which is built of 95% natural material like Sami-made blueberry juice, wood and ice blocks replacing normal steel structures. The ice crust of the torrential river was additionally built up by 50 cm in cooperation with the Army, scientific experts and local water utilities carrying 200 tons of equipment, more than 100 artists, reindeers and a fire sculpture at the end of the ceremony.
Big traditional drums, the ancient Sami runes and architecture find quotation in the setting. The three front stages are standing for the Sami goddesses Sarahkka, Juksahkka and Uksahkka.
LED-illuminated quadcopters of ArsElectronicaFuturelab paint formations into the night sky. Real time Software-art by Frieder Weiss, video-illusions and dynamic light-architecture open up a dialogue from Umeå with Europe and create the fascinating aura of a mystical Auroraborealis.
